Tan's Dominant Opening Round

Singaporean golfer Shannon Tan commenced her campaign at the 2026 Asian Games on September 30 with a commanding performance, carding a seven-under-par 63. Competing at Kasugai Country Club's East Course in Kasugai, Japan, Tan secured a three-shot lead in the women's individual competition.

The 22-year-old, playing alongside Bianca Pagdanganan of the Philippines and Virginie Ding from Hong Kong, China, began strongly with a birdie on the second hole. Despite a bogey on the third, she quickly recovered with three birdies on holes five, seven, and eight to complete her front nine in 32 strokes.

Her back nine included further birdies on the 10th, 11th, 13th, 14th, and 16th, offset by a single bogey on the par-three 12th, to finish the day with a substantial advantage over India's Pranavi Sharath.

Singapore Women's Team at the Forefront

Tan's exceptional individual play also propelled Singapore to the top of the women's team leaderboard after the opening round. Her compatriots contributed solid scores to the team's promising start. Chen Xingtong recorded a 69, placing her in a five-way tie for ninth position, while Amanda Tan returned a 72, sharing 24th place.

The combined efforts of the Singaporean women's contingent position them favourably as the competition progresses, aiming to maintain their lead and contend for team medals in the subsequent rounds.

Men's Competition Update

In the men's individual competition, Hiroshi Tai led the Singaporean challenge with a round of 70, securing a share of 18th place. James Leow finished with a 72, placing him in a tie for 29th, while Nicklaus Chiam signed for a 75, sharing 40th position. The men's team standings saw Japan take an early lead with a combined score of 131.

Singapore's men's team currently shares 11th place with Thailand, both nations posting a collective 142. The men's event, like the women's, will continue over several rounds, with players vying for both individual and team honours.

Implications for Singapore's Medal Hopes

Shannon Tan, a three-time Ladies European Tour winner and the reigning Order of Merit Champion, arrived at the Asian Games with strong credentials, and her opening round has affirmed her status on the international stage. Her dominant start provides a significant boost to Singapore's medal aspirations in both the individual and team women's events.

For travelling golfers and golf enthusiasts following the Games, Tan's performance sets a high bar and indicates that Singapore will be a key nation to watch as the tournament unfolds. The upcoming rounds will determine if Tan can maintain her lead and if the Singaporean teams can convert their strong start into podium finishes.
